Neil Resnick, MD
Dr. Resnick is Thomas DetreProfessor of Medicine and Chief of Geriatrics at UPMC. A pioneer in geriatric syndromes, he created the country’s first Continence Center, discovered the most common cause of geriatric incontinence, and showed that, in older adults, incontinence was multifactorial at every level, even within the urinary tract. Thus, for older adults there could be no “magic bullet;” instead a multifaceted, noninvasive, and medical strategy was most appropriate. This insight led to a new approach which was mandated by Medicare for all nursing home residents and subsequently adopted by the World Health Organization. Since the same strategy proved generalizable to other geriatric syndromes, he was also able to help develop newapproaches to delirium, falls, and osteoporosis. For two decades, Dr. Resnick has been included in Best Doctors in America, and his work has been recognized by several national awards. In 2012, Medicare selected him as an Innovation Advisor.
