Thomas L. Walsh, MD


Tom Walsh is an Infectious Diseases physician at the Allegheny Health Network (AHN) where he serves as Medical Director for the network’s Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP) and the Medical Director of Quality at AHN’s flagship hospital, Allegheny General Hospital. He received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Notre Dame and his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine residency training at the Allegheny Health Network and Infectious Diseases fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). He is a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA).

In these roles, he develops and executes antimicrobial stewardship interventions across AHN that promote judicious antimicrobial use in order to maximize outcomes while minimizing unintentional collateral damage as well as educating healthcare professionals. He founded and directs the AHN TeleASP program, which provides ASP services to hospitals across southwestern Pennsylvania.

His interests include impact of antimicrobial stewardship initiatives on management of lower respiratory tract infections and skin & soft tissue infections as well as the application of biomarkers and rapid diagnostic tests with stewardship interventions. Dr. Walsh has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles focusing on the impact of antimicrobial stewardship interventions and enhanced, rapid diagnostics. He has received numerous teaching awards at AHN for his dedication to house staff education. He routinely speaks regionally and nationally on the impact of antimicrobial stewardship initiatives and the role ASPs have in improving outcomes for patients, clinicians, and hospitals.
